Manufacturing & Sourcing

Is Apparel Manufacturing Actually Coming Back to the U.S.?

Reshoring makes for a compelling headline. The actual manufacturing volume data hasn't caught up with the narrative yet.

"Interest in reshoring and actual reshored production volume are two different numbers, and right now they're not moving in the same direction."

A Real Question, With Real Interest Behind It

Supply chain volatility, tariff uncertainty, and shipping disruption have genuinely pushed more brands to evaluate domestic manufacturing more seriously than in recent memory — a documented shift in sourcing conversation that spans much of the apparel value chain, not just a fringe interest (McKinsey & Company, Reimagining the Apparel Value Chain Amid Volatility).

But the Volume Data Tells a Different Story

Despite that interest, tracked domestic apparel manufacturing output has actually continued declining — one 2025 industry index recorded a significant year-over-year drop in U.S. apparel manufacturing, evidence that increased conversation about reshoring hasn't yet translated into a broad reversal of the manufacturing base itself (WWD/Sourcing Journal, US Apparel Manufacturing Fell 17% in 2025).

What This Means for a Brand Actually Weighing the Decision

The gap between reshoring interest and reshoring reality is a genuine signal worth taking seriously — domestic manufacturing capacity, particularly at scale and at competitive cost, remains more limited than reshoring-friendly headlines can suggest, which means the decision still needs to be evaluated against actual available capacity, not against the broader narrative.
