What to Ask Before Hiring an Apparel Design Studio
A beautiful portfolio says almost nothing about whether a studio can actually get a design through production intact.
"The portfolio shows the studio's best finished work. It rarely shows whether they were the ones who got it through production, or just the ones who drew it."
Questions That Actually Predict Production Success
Beyond style and portfolio fit, the more predictive questions are about process: does the studio produce full tech packs or only creative concepts, do they review strike-offs and samples directly or hand that off entirely to the brand, and have they managed production at the specific volume and complexity this brand actually needs — questions a portfolio alone can't answer (Fashion Index Blog, Why Apparel Manufacturing Takes Longer Than You Expect).
Why Timeline Honesty Is a Real Diagnostic
A studio that gives an unrealistically fast, uncomplicated timeline estimate for full development-through-production work is either inexperienced with the realities of manufacturing lead time or being optimistic to close the deal — neither is a great sign, and the more useful comparison point is how closely a quoted timeline matches documented industry norms for a project of similar complexity.
Asking About the Relationship, Not Just the Deliverable
It's worth asking directly whether the engagement is scoped as a single deliverable or as an ongoing working relationship, since the two require very different levels of process rigor, communication cadence, and long-term investment from both sides — and mismatched expectations on this point are a common source of friction later.
