Custom Apparel vs. Blank Decoration: A Different Value Proposition
Printing a logo on a blank garment and developing a garment from scratch aren't two tiers of the same service. They're two different businesses.
"A decorated blank and a fully custom garment aren't competing for the same customer. They're answering completely different questions."
Two Different Starting Points, Two Different Outcomes
Decorated blanks start with an existing, mass-produced garment — chosen from a catalog of pre-made styles — and apply a logo or graphic on top through printing or embroidery. Custom apparel development starts from nothing, building a garment's pattern, fit, fabric, and construction specifically for that brand, which naturally involves considerably more time, cost, and technical development than decoration alone (Kornit, 7 Types of Shirt Printing and Their Benefits).
Why Neither Option Is Objectively Better
Decorated blanks are the right call for fast-turnaround needs, promotional product, or a brand not yet ready to invest in fully custom development — the speed and lower cost are genuine advantages, not just a lesser version of custom work. Custom development earns its cost when fit, construction, or material genuinely needs to differ from what's available off-the-shelf, which decoration alone can never achieve regardless of how good the graphic is.
Where Brands Often Get the Sequencing Wrong
It's common for a brand to launch on decorated blanks, prove demand, and then transition into custom development once volume and margin justify the investment — a reasonable, staged approach, though one that requires planning the eventual transition deliberately rather than treating custom development as an afterthought once blanks stop feeling sufficient.
